Day 2 - 12th May 2009
Sgurr a Mhadaidh to Bruach na Frithe
2.46 miles: 482m of ascent: 5h 17mins

The next hour saw us dispense with the centre and first summits of Sgurr a Mhadaidh having managed the short climb onto the first summit without too much difficulty and without the use of a rope. The next obstacle, Bidein Druim nan Ramh, was now in sight. We paused on Bealach na Glaic Moire to check the route in the book. As we arrived at the west top we could see the 'group of two' threading their way up on to the east summit. We arrived on the east summit at 13:53pm just as the second of the 'group of two' was disappearing as he abseiled off it. As we put on our harnesses and helmets we were joined on the summit by two people who had started at 3:00am that morning from Glen Brittle intending to complete the ridge traverse in one day although they had come up to Coire a Ghrunnda and not gone out to Gars-bheinn. We offered them the use of our rope to 'save time' but they scouted around and before we were ready to abseil they had already down-climbed off the summit! They were clearly a lot more competent at climbing than we are and that was the last we saw of them!! We completed the two abseils and now started to feel we were on the home straight albeit an uphill one. At the bealach below Bidein Druim nan Ramh we stopped for our second lunch break and were shortly joined by the 'group of five'. They were a group of 'climbers' from Nottingham away on a week's holiday. They had certainly chosen the right week! We set off before them and reached the awkward 'gap' below Sgurr na Bairnich which proved a challenging down climb. First out to the left and then back right. The 'group of five' arrived above us just as we had completed it. Despite our best efforts to give advice they ended up too high and decided to resort to an abseil. We 'leapt' the first 'gap' on the next section but chickened out at the second and larger gap of the two and skirted down right around it. This was the last hurdle before we reached to the summit of Bruach na Frithe at 17:03pm. For us it was a real milestone as this was as far as we had reached on our first attempt in 2005. We remain astounded that we managed to reach this far on that occasion.
